Are Entrepreneur Courses Worth It? Everything You Need to Know

Entrepreneurship is often romanticized as a journey of grit, creativity, and endless hustle. But here’s the burning question: Can entrepreneurship really be taught, or is it something you’re born with? If you’ve ever wondered whether investing in entrepreneur courses is worth your time and money, you’re not alone. In this blog post, we’ll explore this topic from all angles, sharing personal anecdotes, insights, and actionable tips to help you make an informed decision.

The Case for Entrepreneur Courses

Let’s start with the big wins. Entrepreneur courses excel at teaching you the practical skills you need to run a successful business. Whether it’s understanding your finances, crafting a killer marketing strategy, or learning how to build an email list that converts, these programs are goldmines of actionable insights.

When I launched my first business, I was driven but clueless about the technical aspects. I spent countless nights on YouTube trying to figure out how to build a WordPress website and tackle SEO. The frustration was real. Then I invested in a specialized course, and everything changed. It gave me the structure and tools I needed to move forward confidently.

The best courses go beyond theory. For example, Amy Porterfield’s Digital Course Academy not only taught me email marketing strategies but also how to analyze data to predict conversion rates. That single skill added thousands to my bottom line. The key is finding a course that provides actionable steps you can implement immediately.

The Unexpected Benefits of Taking Courses

Entrepreneur courses offer more than just skill development. Here are some lesser-known perks:

  1. Networking Opportunities
Many courses include access to private communities where you can connect with like-minded entrepreneurs. These connections can lead to collaborations, partnerships, and even new clients. During one course, I joined a peer group that became my go-to sounding board for ideas. These relationships continue to support my business growth today.
  2. Confidence Boost
Gaining clarity and learning new skills can give you the confidence to take bolder steps in your business. When you know what you’re doing, you’re more likely to take action, and action is the foundation of success.
  3. Accountability
Many programs include live components or coaching, which can help keep you accountable. For those of us who thrive with a little structure, this can be a game-changer.
  4. Learning Beyond the Curriculum
Often, the real magic lies in the interactions and Q&A sessions with the instructor and peers. This dynamic environment helps you learn things you didn’t even know you needed.

What Entrepreneur Courses Can’t Teach You

While courses are invaluable for learning new skills, there are some things they just can’t teach:

  • Drive and Resilience
Entrepreneurship requires grit to push through challenges. No course can instill that fire in your belly—it has to come from within. For example, when my first workshop only attracted two sign-ups, I wanted to give up. But resilience kept me going, and my next launch was a success.
  • Creativity and Innovation
Courses can teach frameworks, but your ability to think outside the box and adapt is something you cultivate through experience.
  • Risk Tolerance
Entrepreneurs must embrace uncertainty. This is something you build over time, not something you learn in a classroom.

How to Choose the Right Course

Not all courses are created equal. Here’s how to ensure you’re investing wisely:

  1. Do Your Research
Look for reviews, testimonials, and evidence of the instructor’s real-world experience. Have they helped others succeed, or just themselves? A course should demonstrate proven results, not just theoretical concepts.
  2. Align With Your Needs
Are you a beginner looking for foundational skills or an experienced entrepreneur seeking advanced strategies? Choose a course that matches your current level.
  3. Evaluate the ROI
What tangible benefits will you gain? Will the course provide actionable steps to grow your business? A great course pays for itself over time.
  4. Consider the Format
Do you learn best with live instruction, video modules, or written materials? Choose a format that suits your learning style to maximize your experience.

My Personal Experience

A few years ago, I worked with a client who avoided digital marketing because it felt overwhelming. Together, we broke it into manageable steps, and she doubled her revenue in just six months. That experience inspired me to create my own course, IGNITE Your Digital Marketing Boot Camp, designed to simplify marketing for overwhelmed entrepreneurs.

IGNITE has since helped countless entrepreneurs gain clarity, confidence, and results in their marketing strategies. Watching their transformations reinforces my belief that the right course can truly change the trajectory of your business.

The Red Flags to Watch For

While there are many amazing courses, there are also some that fall short. Here are a few red flags to look out for:

  • Overpromising Results
Be wary of courses that promise overnight success. Building a business takes time and effort.
  • Lack of Proven Results
If the instructor hasn’t helped others achieve success, their methods might not be reliable.
  • Fluffy Content
Courses filled with generic advice and no actionable steps aren’t worth your time or money.

Are Entrepreneur Courses Worth It?

The short answer: Yes—but only if you’re ready to do the work. The right course can provide you with tools and strategies, but it’s up to you to implement them. It’s not about finding a magic bullet; it’s about choosing the right program, putting in the effort, and staying committed to your goals.

If you’re ready to take the leap, check out IGNITE Your Digital Marketing Boot Camp. Doors are open now, and this is your chance to simplify your marketing, grow your visibility, and finally feel confident in your strategy.

[00:00:48.560] – Deanna Hinsz

In each episode, we dive into actionable tips, inspiring stories, and real strategies to help you grow your business, boost your confidence, and create unstoppable momentum. Whether you’re just starting out or ready to elevate to the next level, you’re in the right place. Let’s get started.

[00:01:36.000] – Deanna Hinsz

All right, so let’s start with the big picture. What exactly is entrepreneurship? Well, if you Google it, you’ll find definitions that talk about creating and scaling a business, taking risks and solving problems. And I’d agree with all of that. But I also think that entrepreneurship is so much more at its core. Entrepreneurship is a mindset. It’s about drive, creativity and resilience. But here’s the twist. While I don’t think you can teach someone to have the drive to be an entrepreneur, I absolutely believe that you can teach them the skills to be successful. So I wanted to share a quick story. When I first started my business, I had the drive, but I lacked the technical skills. I remember sitting at my dining room table trying to figure out how to work WordPress. And let me tell you, it was a disaster. But I started on YouTube and I’d watch these YouTube videos all through the night, because in the day I was working on my business and I would learn a little bit, but I’d have to search for these YouTube videos to show me how to do one thing, and it was usually whatever obstacle I hit.

[00:02:53.740] – Deanna Hinsz

And then you throw SEO into the mix. Because search engine optimization is so important when you’re designing a website. The two go together. They have to go together if you want a good website. Well, if you’ve ever tried to learn SEO, it can be a ton of information and as soon as you think you’ve got it, all the rules change. So I took a course on SEO, and I took a course on coding and really understanding how I can create a custom WordPress website for somebody. Taking the course changed everything. It was during that time that I learned the skills that I needed to do, be better at what I was doing, and that was designing websites. And that’s where courses come into play. The right course can teach you how to market your business can teach you how to build an email list, manage your finances, and so much more. But not all courses are created equal. And we’re going to talk about that a little bit later. But first let’s talk about the good stuff.

[00:04:02.290] – Deanna Hinsz

What can entrepreneurship courses actually teach you? First, they’re amazing for learning practical skills. I’m talking about the nuts and bolts of running a business. Understanding your finances, creating a marketing strategy, and even how to sell your products or your services effectively. For example, I took a course I love taking courses because I get so much out of it, but I took Amy Porterfield’s email marketing course and she taught me so much. And you get lifetime access to it, and I was able to understand what actually goes into growing your email list and then the emails that you were writing. And I learned how to get those emails to actually convert that one skill alone brought in thousands of dollars in revenue for my business. She taught how to look at the data, and prior to that, I really wasn’t looking at any of the data that much. But today I understand the data, and I know that when I send out an email with a certain call to action, I can pretty much guesstimate what my conversion rate will be.

[00:05:18.980] – Deanna Hinsz

Now, the second thing is that these courses can provide you with tangible benefits that go beyond just the content. A lot of the programs include networking opportunities, which means that you get to connect with other like minded entrepreneurs. Just recently, obviously, I’m a huge fan of Amy Porterfield, and if you know me, you’re not surprised by that. But I just did her digital course Academy, and in that she created these DCA pods and she has a platform in her momentum, which is a membership that follows DCA. And you get to really connect with all these entrepreneurs and get to know them. And you can share ideas with them or tell them. Ask them, not tell them, but ask them if they would take a look at what you’re doing, your landing page, your course, your lead magnet and they become a sounding board for ideas. And they are a huge source of support, you know, and taking a course. Honestly, it builds your confidence because now you know what you’re doing.

[00:06:27.360] – Deanna Hinsz

And when you feel that confidence, you’re more likely to take action. And as entrepreneurs, taking action is the name of the game. Okay, now let’s flip the coin. What can’t entrepreneurship courses teach you? And before I get into this, I’m going to share a funny story. I was invited to speak at a university and it was their entrepreneurship class. Now, I didn’t realize that I was speaking to an entrepreneurship class. I thought I was speaking to a marketing class and I was talking about marketing. I had no reason to think that it was an entrepreneurship class, but I guess I should have asked more questions and the professor asked me in front of the class, do I feel that entrepreneurship could be is an appropriate course? My answer was no and this was a knee jerk. I still stand by my answer, but I probably would have had it more polished right? That I don’t think that you can take a course to be an entrepreneur. The reason for it is because classes and courses can’t teach you drive.

[00:07:46.270] – Deanna Hinsz

Let’s face it, if you are an entrepreneur, you know that it takes. I mentioned it earlier. It takes that grit. It takes that resilience. It takes so much to get knocked down and pull yourself back up and to try to figure it out. More times than not, on your own, especially in the beginning. So having that drive and that determination to start and grow a business has to come from within. It’s that fire in your belly that keeps you going when things get tough. And let me tell you, I’ve had some really tough times. When I first launched my first workshop and only having two people sign up, I wanted to quit. But that drive keeps me going. That drive, whatever it is that’s in that fire in your belly that keeps you going, that keeps you pushing, that’s that’s what makes an entrepreneur an entrepreneur. Well, I’m sure that you can share the similar story. When I did the next launch, right then it became successful. More people signed up.

[00:08:53.160] – Deanna Hinsz

People were talking about it. Now it’s one of my most popular courses, and that’s ignite, ignite your digital marketing. And it has become a huge success No courses can’t teach you creativity or risk tolerance. Those are deeply personal traits that develop over time and honestly through trial and error. More times than not, and courses can’t do the work for you. Even the best courses in the world won’t get you the results if you don’t implement what you’ve learned. And being fully transparent. I have purchased courses. I like taking courses. I love sharpening my skills. I think it’s vital for entrepreneurs to invest in themselves and in learning and in sharpening their skills. And there are times that I’ve purchased a course and I’ve bought it, and it’s had full intention of following through and I’ve not put the work in. It just saves us a file on my desk, and every once in a while I’d pop in there to see until I would forget that I even bought it. And one day I’d see it and it’s like, oh my gosh, I did pay for that.

[00:10:04.970] – Deanna Hinsz

Let me go check it out. But the courses where I do the work. That’s when you see the results. And that’s what’s so important. If you don’t do the work and you don’t implement what you’ve learned, then that course isn’t going to amount to anything. So our entrepreneurship course is worth it. My answer is a resounding yes, but with a caveat. They’re worth it if you choose the right one. The right course will teach you actionable strategies, not just theory. And I have taken a lot that are just fluff and theory. I want actionable strategies. I want to take a course that I can take it, and I see the steps of what I need to do. And they’re proven steps. The a good course is going to be taught by somebody who’s been in your shoes, and they know what it takes to succeed, and more importantly, that it aligns with your goals. For example, that course that taught me how to optimize my website wasn’t just about theory, it was actionable.

[00:11:19.230] – Deanna Hinsz

And I could see the results almost immediately in my traffic and my sales. But I’m going to be honest, not all courses are created equal. Be aware of programs that promise overnight success or seem too good to be true. If you’re going to invest your time and money, make sure it’s a course that delivers real value. I remember early on when I was learning social media and I kind of fell into social media. If you’ve heard my story before, I was taught by some amazing people in a way that I connected with, that shared with me. They were all social media managers, and I was just figuring out what I was doing, but I didn’t realize that they were the social media managers for Oprah and TMZ and Yahoo and all these big names. Had I known that, I probably would have never engaged with that group because my confidence would not would have allowed me, I didn’t have that confidence in social media. I had no idea what I was doing at the time. And we’re talking about 2010, 2011, when it was fairly new.

[00:12:26.880] – Deanna Hinsz

And in regards to marketing your small business. And I saw somebody actually, I’ve seen this a few times. It’s not one particular person. I’ve seen it a few times where they’ll have a social media course and or an event where they’re teaching things, and the person has done an amazing job with their own social media, but they’ve never stepped into a client’s shoes to manage their social media and to grow it to the same. And let me explain why that’s so important, that when you’re looking for somebody that is teaching a course that they’ve not just done it for themselves, but they’ve done it for other people. And the reason for that is this. And I’m using the social media as an example. When you’re growing your own social media, your following knows you. You know your brand voice. You can share things that are personal. You, you kind of dictate the whole map and the road and where you’re going with everything. When you’re managing social media for somebody else, you don’t have all that control.

[00:13:34.650] – Deanna Hinsz

The brand voice is going to be different, their strategy might look different, and it’s going to be different, right? The reason it’s going to be different is because even if you took three candle makers, we’ll say now we’ll say 30 candle makers, you took 30 candle makers and you managed their strategy on social media. They’re all going to be a little bit different, but they’re also are going to be a little bit similar. And the thing is, is that you want to find what’s similar and what’s worked and aligned with all of them, so that you know that if candle makers came to you. These are the things that are going to work, right? So when you only stay inside your tunnel and you only have done your own and you’ve done it amazing and successfully giving those actionable steps to an audience may or may not work. So again, I’m sharing this so that you look at who’s teaching the course and what have they done? Is it just for themselves or is it for others that they’ve helped and looked at?

[00:14:42.220] – Deanna Hinsz

Testimonials too. Okay, so let’s get back on track. If you’re considering an entrepreneurship course, here’s three things that will help you choose if it’s the right one. And I probably have gone off on a tangent a little bit already, but I feel it’s so important. The first thing is do your research. Check your reviews, check testimonials, check out the instructor’s credentials, look for real world experience and proven results. And not just from their own social, not just from their own website, from their own SEO. Look at it for working with different people, different types of businesses, um, and really evaluate all that. The second tip is align with your needs. So are you a beginner and you’re looking for those foundational skills. Then look for something a course that’s just teaching those foundational skills. But if you’ve done all that and you know the foundational skills, but you’re looking for something deeper and you want more advanced strategies, then take a course for that. And you want to make sure that the course that you’re taking matches up with, where you are in your journey.

[00:16:00.740] – Deanna Hinsz

Don’t try to take a course that’s advanced thinking that it will get you there, because you may be missing some of those foundational skills that you need, and you’re just going to get overwhelmed and frustrated and then not implement what you’re being taught in that advanced strategies class. So make sure that it just matches up with where you are in your journey. Invest wisely. When you are purchasing a course, you have to look at it like it’s an investment in your business. This is not a guarantee. Look for programs that offer a solid return on investment. If you follow these three tips, you’re going to be well on your way to finding a course that’s worth every penny. Now let me share one more story. A few years ago, I worked with a client who was completely overwhelmed by digital marketing. She didn’t know where to start, so she avoided it all together. Does that sound familiar? We work together to break it down into simple steps. She ended up doubling her revenue in just six months.

[00:17:08.510] – Deanna Hinsz

That experience inspired me to create a system that could help more entrepreneurs, which eventually turned into my course, Ignite Your Digital Marketing Masterclass. Now this class is the doors are opened. As of now, they are open and they’re only open for a couple weeks. But to wrap up this podcast episode, can entrepreneurship be taught? I’d say partially. You can’t teach someone to have the drive or the resilience to be an entrepreneur, but you absolutely can teach them the skills to succeed. That’s why I’m so passionate about courses like ignite. They fill the gaps, giving you the tools and the strategy you need to take your business to the next level. But it’s up to you to bring the drive and to put those tools to work. So if you’re ready to take action, the doors to ignite your Digital Marketing masterclass are open right now, and this is your chance to simplify your marketing, grow your visibility, and finally feel confident in your business strategy.
