Listen to the episode.

If you’re ready to step up, stand out, and thrive in your business, this episode is a must-listen. In today’s episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with the inspiring Malika Malhotra, an award-winning brand strategist and dynamic speaker. We dove deep into the power of niche marketing and how defining your unique strengths can transform your business.

Why Niche Marketing Matters

Mallika’s journey is nothing short of remarkable. Mallika has seen everything from working in corporate advertising with giants like L’Oréal and Oil of Olay to becoming a sought-after mentor and brand strategist. Here are the key takeaways from our conversation:

[00:02:20] Malika’s Transition from Corporate to Entrepreneurship

Malika started her career in corporate advertising, where she gained invaluable experience. However, after becoming a mother, she decided to leave the corporate world and become an entrepreneur. Her journey included experimenting with various businesses before finding her true calling in brand strategy and photography.

“I started off in corporate. I left corporate because I became a mother, sort of opted out, as many do. And it was a choice that I had made. But after being a mom for a few years, I kind of was like, ugh, I have this itch. I want to do something more.”

[00:11:19] Understanding What a Niche Is

Malika explains that a niche is a specialized segment within your industry. It’s about being specific and focused on a particular area of expertise, audience, or problem.

“A niche is a specialized segment in your industry, a specific solution for a specific audience with a specific problem. Specific is the key word here.”

[00:12:23] When to Niche Down

It’s important to experiment in the early stages of your business to understand what works best. Malika advises that once you start hitting a wall or feel stagnant, it’s time to niche down.

“You need to experiment, you need to research, you need to make money, you need to get your name out there. But you will know when you start hitting that wall, when your sales get stagnant, when you’re being overlooked.”

[00:17:25] Finding the Right Niche

To determine your niche, look at the data from your business. Identify what you’re good at, where the money is coming from, and what clients consistently seek you out for.

“Look at the data. What are the offers that are working? What are people asking to pick your brain about? This is all data you need to look at, pay attention to, write it out, keep it in a spreadsheet and look at the patterns.”

[00:19:53] Committing to Your Niche

Once you’ve identified your niche, commit to it for at least three to six months. Use social media to test your messaging and see if it resonates with your audience.

“Commit for three months. Change your taglines, change your bio, do it on social media first. Start having content and messaging that’s in alignment with that niche.”

[00:22:22] Adjusting Your Messaging

Adjust your messaging to reflect your niche clearly. Your elevator pitch and online bios should convey exactly who you are, what you do, and who you serve.

“I am a life coach who specializes in mindset for empty nesters whose kids have just left and now they’re trying to figure out their next stage. Very clear, your elevator pitch, your niche.”

[00:24:23] Overcoming the Fear of Niching Down

Niching down can be scary because it feels like you’re leaving money on the table. However, becoming a specialist allows you to charge premium prices and attract better clients.

“Reframe it. Instead of having fear, have it empower you that you are now going to be this master in this area of expertise and you can go deep and produce amazing results for your clients.”

Final Thoughts

Niching down is not about limiting your opportunities; it’s about focusing your efforts where you can make the most impact. By becoming an expert in a specific area, you can stand out in a crowded market and accelerate your business growth. As Malika advises, track your data, refine your messaging, and commit to your niche for several months to see the benefits.
