Is AI Hurting Your Reach on Social Media?

Here’s What Meta Just Changed (And What You Should Do About It)

If you’re using AI to help with your content—good for you. Smart move. But if you’ve been copying and pasting whatever your favorite tool spits out and calling it a day?

We need to talk.

Because as of July 14, 2025, Meta (yes, Facebook, Instagram, and Threads’ parent company) officially cracked down on what they’re calling “unoriginal content.” And no, this isn’t just about stolen memes or bots. It directly impacts creators, coaches, service providers, and small business owners… especially if you’re using AI tools to create your content.

So before you hit publish on another generic quote graphic or long-winded carousel post written entirely by ChatGPT without edits, let’s unpack what’s happening,  and more importantly, how you can use this update to stand out in the best way possible.

What Did Meta Actually Say?

According to the official update from Meta’s Creator Blog on July 14:

“We’re reducing the visibility of content that is reused from other sources without adding significant value, commentary, or transformative elements. We’re also restricting monetization for those who consistently post unoriginal content.”

Translation? If your post looks like a clone, whether it was created by AI or another creator, Meta’s going to stop showing it to people. Ouch!

How to Stay in Meta’s Good Graces (Without Losing Your Voice)

Meta didn’t say you have to stop creating content—or even stop using AI or other tools. But they did give us a playbook for what they want more of (and what they’re now penalizing). And honestly? It aligns beautifully with what I teach every day: strategy, clarity, and simplicity.

Here’s how to keep showing up and get rewarded for it:

1. Share Original Content (Yes, Your Face Still Wins)

Meta gives the most visibility to posts that are original—meaning content you actually created or filmed yourself. That could be a Reel, a carousel, a short video tip, a behind-the-scenes snapshot… If it’s yours, it matters.

Pro tip: You can share the same content across your different Pages or profiles. Just make sure you’re the original creator.

2. Get rid of those watermarks

TikTok users- I’m looking at you! Ok, you aren’t the only one who does this, but y’all do love to share your TikToks right to IG. Now it’s your cue to stop doing that.

3. Be the storyteller

We all love a good story- it pulls us in and keeps us engaged! Meta is telling you to do more of that.

4. Don’t make it too short

Even though Meta doesn’t limit how long or short a video can be, it is saying not to make it too short! It doesn’t bring enough value to their users and they want the value.

5. Captions matter

Meta is looking for high-quality and relevent captions. Here’s what they don’t want:

  • Link
  • Too many capital letters
  • Five hashtags or less

7 Ways to Stay Compliant and Still Use AI (The Smart Way)

Let’s keep things simple and strategic. Here’s how to still use AI in your content creation without getting penalized:

1. Use AI to Spark Ideas, Not Publish Final Drafts
Ask your AI tool for a hook, outline, or brainstorm—but then rewrite it in your own voice. Add examples. Speak directly to your ICA (ideal client avatar). Make it yours.

2. Add Commentary, Story, or Transformation
React to a trend. Break down a quote. Add your unique perspective. Meta loves “transformative” content—meaning it adds context, nuance, or insight.

3. Use Real Photos, Behind-the-Scenes Clips, and Your Face
Skip the AI stock photos and use your content. This builds trust and keeps your content out of the unoriginal trap.

4. Don’t Reuse the Same Caption Across Platforms
It’s tempting to repurpose captions word-for-word—but tweak the hook, the tone, or the CTA so each one feels native to its platform.

5. Repost With Purpose, Not Just Because
Old posts can be recycled strategically. Add a new intro. Update your CTA. Tie it to something timely. Show that it’s been refreshed.

6. Track Your Reach and Engagement
If your views suddenly plummet, Meta may be deprioritizing your content. Audit what you’re posting and make sure it’s high-value, not high-volume.

The Real Secret? Your Voice Is the Strategy

You don’t need to fight the algorithm. You just need to out-human it.

Because while everyone else is obsessing over “how many times to post” or “what audio is trending,” you’re focusing on what actually matters: building trust, creating clarity, and giving your audience a reason to stick around.

Meta is simply confirming what we already know: original, personality-packed, value-rich content wins. And that’s what you’ve been working on all along.

Here’s a challenge for this week:
Pick one piece of content you created using AI—caption, blog, or carousel—and ask yourself:

“Does this sound like me? Is it helping someone? Would I want to read this if I wasn’t me?”

If the answer’s “meh”… rewrite it. Add a story. Insert your personality. Speak to your ICA like she’s in the room with you.

Because that’s what turns content into connection—and connection drives conversion.

You don’t need to ditch AI. But you do need to lead it.

Use it to simplify, not replace, your creativity. Let it spark ideas, structure your thoughts, and reduce overwhelm, but don’t let it steal your voice.

Want to future-proof your content—and your conversions? Start with your website. It’s your 24/7 sales machine, and if it’s not built to convert, no algorithm can save it.
