The Welcome Email That Converts: How to Write a Sequence That Sells (Without Feeling Sleazy)

She is Unstoppable - Episode 91

If you know me, you know I love email marketing. Not just because it helps you grow your business (which it absolutely does), but because it gives you a direct line to your people. It’s one of the few digital tools we have where we get to speak one-on-one, no algorithms, no distractions. Just you, your voice, and the people who raised their hand and said, “Yes, I want to hear from you.”

That’s powerful. And it starts with one of the most overlooked tools in your entire marketing strategy: the welcome email.

Let’s talk about how to make yours unforgettable.

Why Welcome Emails Matter (More Than You Think)

When someone joins your email list, they’re saying, “I trust you enough to give you my inbox.” That’s sacred space. But so often, we respond with a generic “Thanks for subscribing!” and… nothing else.

Your welcome email (or better yet, welcome sequence) is prime real estate. It’s your chance to:

  • Set expectations

  • Share your heart

  • Invite them into your world

  • Start a real relationship

This isn’t about being polished. It’s about being present.

My Journey to Email Marketing (And Why I Care So Much)

I didn’t set out to be a marketing strategist. My degree is in psychology. I was a divorced mom with two boys and a burning desire to build something on my terms. My first business? Baking from my kitchen. I used Facebook and Twitter (back when they were shiny and new), and that’s how everything started.

Women began asking how I did it, and at first, I had no idea what to tell them. But over time, I realized I did know. That evolved into She Is Collective and CarbonSilk—two branches of the same mission: helping women simplify digital marketing and build profitable businesses with confidence.

So when I talk about email, it’s not just from a place of strategy. It’s from experience. Email marketing was the first place I got to use my voice to make real connections—and I want the same for you.

The 3-Part Welcome Sequence I Swear By

Here’s my go-to framework. It’s simple, heartfelt, and works like a charm:

Email 1: The Welcome + Delivery
Start by giving them what they signed up for. If it’s a freebie, deliver it. If it’s your newsletter, welcome them in. Keep it short, personal, and full of warmth. Let them know what to expect from you—and maybe even ask them to reply. (Yes, real conversations happen in the inbox!)

Email 2: The Story + Connection Builder
This is where I share my “why.” Not the glossy version—the real one. I talk about the pivots, the fear, the figuring-it-out-as-I-go journey. Because my ICA needs to hear that. She needs to know I get her. This email is all about building trust and showing up as a human first.

Email 3: The Value + Gentle Invite
Now that they’ve seen what you stand for, this is where you start adding value. Share a tip, a story, or a tool that will help them. And if the timing’s right? Invite them into your offer. Not with pressure—with intention.

Your Voice Is the Strategy

Let me be real: one of the biggest mistakes I see is when people try to sound “professional” in a way that strips out all personality. Or they overuse AI and lose their unique tone.

I love AI. I use it every day. But your voice? That’s your secret sauce.

When someone reads your email, they should hear you in their head. The way you talk. The way you encourage. The way you show up.

And if you ever get stuck, record yourself saying what you’d tell a friend. Then write that.

A Note from My Inbox to Yours

I don’t take it lightly when someone joins my list. If you’re here, I want you to know: I see you. Whether you open every email or just catch a few, I’m grateful.

That’s why I want your welcome email to feel like a true beginning. Not a transaction. Not an automation. A real “Hey, I’m glad you’re here.”

So if you’ve been putting off writing yours, consider this your permission slip to finally start. Messy is fine. Imperfect is powerful. Just begin.

And if you want to see my welcome sequence in action? Grab one of my freebies and come see what it looks like from the inside. No fluff, no spam, just connection.

You’ve got this. And I’m cheering for you every step of the way.

XO,
Deanna
